September 11: 10 Year Commemoration and Digital Resources

As the ten year commemoration of the historic and tragic events of September 11, 2011 occurs this month, the Learning Resource and Technology Center is highlighting a notable information resource, The September 11 Digital Archive, Saving the Histories of September 11, 2001. This very interesting and useful site features electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the history of that terrible day, organizing 150,000 digital items, including emails and other electronic communications, first hand accounts, and 15,000+ digital images. In September 2003, the Library of Congress accepted the Archive into its collections. This resource can now be found on our library's website. Go to Internet Resources and Searching and the link will be located in the General Information category.

Libraries top McDonald's Numbers

Here's some interesting library facts and statistics as noted by Leonard Kniffel in American Libraries Magazine last fall.

Public libraries and their branch outlets (16,549) outnumber McDonald's restaurants in the USA.

U.S. public library use has reached a new high level. Approximately 2 out of every 3 adults (63%) have a library card.

Book publishing is at an all time high with nearly 300,000 (English language) titles issued yearly.

Academic and public library reference librarians/information specialists (USA) on a weekly basis are responding to 7.2 million questions. Academic librarians alone are handling 72.8 million information/title requests annually.

For computer access, the public library is the first choice for those without home or work computers. Consequently 98.9% of public libraries provide such access, and librarians provide help in achieving accurate and relevant search results.

Relatedly, Mpls businessman and author Harvey Mackay recently touted the services and benefits of libraries in the Star-Trib, even creating one of his Mackay's Morals. "The library is a truly amazing resource - check it out."

New Library Catalog Resource

Debra S. Fish Early Childhood Resource Library

This agency's library catalog of resources has just been added to the PTC library's LIBRARY CATALOGS web page. Library resources are available for families, child care providers, students, trainers, educators and early childhood professionals. Once an individual is registered as a library patron by phone, mail, or website, needed resources can be mailed to those living outside the seven county metro area. This convenient Books by Mail service is available until at least June 15, 2011. A return postage label is enclosed with the shipment for convenient mail return of the items. Items are checked out for three weeks. Of course, one can use the library in person at its St. Paul location.

One of EBSCOhost's easy to use databases is POINTS OF VIEW REFERENCE CENTER available on the LRTC web page. (Go to Research Databases>EBSCOhost>Point of View Reference Center.) This database of information covers more than 270 topics (substance abuse, animal welfare, earth and environment, evolution, and immigration as examples) and presents the information from multiple sides of the topic. It's a good resource to use as a starting point in gathering information for a paper or research project. It is an ideal resource if one needs to develop a persuasive argument on paper or for a speech.

The University of Minnesota, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and Minnesota Department of Education have joined forces and created a new website for Minnesota students, parents, and educators. State and higher education officials view it as the "crossroads of online education services in Minnesota." A one-stop site for sometimes hard-to-find education resources, it is the most comprehensive site of its kind found in the country. Check it out at www.mnlearningcommons.org

New Research Databases Added

EBSCO Host has added 30 new research databases! Science Reference Center. It has over 600 science videos, 2,500 biographies of scientists, 116 Full-Text Journals not available in other EBSCO products. If you are familiar with Academic Search Premier and need information on science-related topics, be sure to check the select box for this database.
They've also added some medical references. Check out Health Source Nursing /Academic Edition. This database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names. The Consumer Edition is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Alt Health Watch: This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers libraries full text articles for more than 180 international, and often peer-reviewed journals and reports. In addition, there are hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine. This database features indexing and abstracts going back as far as 1984, and full text going back as far as 1990

Computers Available in Room 100

Duplex Printing Now Available

With the start of Fall Semester, we have a new printer in the LRTC, set up to print on both sides of the paper. Your print jobs will automatically print on both sides. If you need your print out on only one side, you will have to uncheck the print on both sides box under Properties and then the Finishing tab. See the service desk attendant if you have any questions.

Pine Technical College has placed a new link in Student Tools regarding plagiarism. Students have access to a resource explaining what it is and how to avoid it. It also gives tips for citations. Look under Academics>College Library>Student Tools>Plagiarism and Citations. Check out this new source!

Summer Session Ends

Another successful session ended on July 24th, 2009. The LRTC was a busy place, with students doing research papers and other course work on the computers. We had students in again this week checking their grades, and another orientation session as well.
The announcement went out to your email accounts, but worth mentioning here as well, the LRTC WILL BE CLOSED FOR FALL SEMESTER PREPARATIONS THE WEEK OF AUGUST 10-14. Please plan accordingly so you don't come in and find you can't use the LRTC.

Tax Dollars at Work for You!

The State of Minnesota funds the services we offer in the LRTC for your research needs.
This legislative session, the following appropriations were approved:

Subdivision 8. Electronic library for Minnesota (ELM). This section appropriates $900,000 each year for statewide licenses to online databases selected in cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education for school media centers, public libraries, state government agency libraries, and public or private college or university libraries.
Subd. 17. MnLINK Gateway and Minitex. Appropriates $6.031 million each year for MnLINK, the Minnesota Library Information Network and Minitex, a publicly supported network of academic, public, state government, and special libraries working to improve library service.

This legislation and the resulting access to special databases and cooperative services allow all types of Minnesota libraries to provide services at a much lower annual cost than if each library was acting and operating alone.

Computers Update

Vista on LRTC Computers

The Vista operating system has been installed on the LRTC and lab computers for summer session. You will initially have a slow login time, this should speed up with subsequent logins. You also need to logon, logoff and on again in order for printing to work. Your first initial and last name along with your former password should still be operational, unless your password has expired. Email me if you have trouble logging on the computers.

Summer Session begins Monday

Summer session at Pine Technical College begins Monday, June 1. There are several classes being held, along with a couple of ITV courses delivered from Southwest Minnesota State University. Hope everyone has a great session!

MnKnows – Dig Deeper @ Your Library (www.mnknows.org) gives Minnesotans one-stop access to five statewide library services:
· Find books, CDs, DVDs, articles and more through the MnLINK Gateway and have them delivered to a local library.
· Search trusted information resources in the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM) to find online articles and electronic books on a vast array of topics.
· Discover photos, documents and maps related to Minnesota history through Minnesota Reflections.
· Get real-time answers from a librarian 24/7 at AskMN.
· Use the Research Project Calculator to create sensible timelines for student's homework.
Leveraging state, local, and federal funds to supplement the resources of local libraries, MnKnows (or, read it as "Minnesota knows") functions through the cooperation of libraries, school media centers, and cultural heritage organizations throughout the state. When visitors wish to dig deeper at their local library, MnKnows.org provides a link to the Minnesota Library Directory, which lists public, academic, and other libraries in a specified area. The directory is maintained by State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education.

New Brochure Available

LRTC staff members have just prepared a brochure, Global Climate Change Resources for Earth Day 2009, featuring print titles and web-sites focusing on climate change issues.
