New book from NAEYC

The latest book from NAEYC, Five Elements of Collective Leadership for Early Childhood Professionals by Cassandra O'Neill and Monica Brinkerhoff is now ready for checkout.  This book challenges teachers, administrators, coaches, and systems change leaders to build on strengths, develop strategies for positive change, and partner with colleagues to push through barriers to accomplish goals, as stated by NAEYC's Kathy Charner, editor-in-chief, books and related resources.  Stop in and check it out!

Workshop tomorrow!

The Stress Management: Balancing Life & College workshop will take place tomorrow, November 7, 2017 in Room 114, the Academic Skills Center, 2:00 pm- 3:00 pm.  Stop in for some tips and help with your questions balancing your college and home life.

Registration Lab Today!

The next open registration lab coordinated by the Student Success team is scheduled for Monday, October 30^th from 10am-5pm in room 70 (no appointments are necessary).  Stop in for help with registering for spring classes! 

Student Success Workshops

Our fall workshop series is winding down, and the Learning Styles Inventory workshop will be held this Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 from 2:00-3:00 pm in the Academic Skills Center, room 114.  Stop in for some tips on learning styles and what might be an eye-opening experience for you!  No appointment needed, just show up!

World Book Day Sunday, April 23

World Book Day was created in 1995 at UNESCO's General Conference, "to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity."

Curl up with a good book, or  use the hashtag #LoveToRead to share your book happy moments on social media!

It's National Library Week!

Hello!  It's National Library Week, here are a couple photos showing some of the recent additions to our library collections.

See something that interests you?  Type in a title here and you will be searching our catalog for location and availability.

Another great resource to try is the Atomic Learning website.  The learning framework, called Hoonuit, where you Learnit, Doit, Shareit, Proveit.  There are over 250 topics to be searched, discovered, viewed, and possibly give you the aha moment where you learned something that really helped with your assignment or research paper.  Check it out!  You will be taken to the login page, where you use your StarID and password to gain access, either on or off-campus.

Ebooks Minnesota: Online eBook collection just launched

 

 

Collection includes more than 2,000 books and features titles from in-state publishers



 

 

 

 

 

EbooksMN.org  an online eBook collection spearheaded by Minnesota’s libraries, is open to Minnesota readers. The collection is accessible online  and via free apps from iTunes, Google Play, and Kindle.

 

There is no charge to libraries or individuals who wish to use the collection, and no username or password is required. Ebooks Minnesota is open to all readers within Minnesota’s borders.

 No process is required to “check out” a book.

Readers can access any book in the collection at any time regardless of how many other readers are also using that book. This feature makes the collection particularly useful for schools that may wish to assign a single book to an entire class or even an entire school. Likewise, community book clubs, no matter how large, can read books together without worrying about checkout limits or due dates.

 The collection contains more than 2,000 books, including titles from these Minnesota publishers:

●        ABDO

●        Lerner Publishing Group

●        Cherry Lake Publishing

●        University of Minnesota Press

●        Milkweed Press

●        Coffeehouse Press

 

Nonfiction titles from Arcadia Publishing about Minnesota and its history are also included in the collection. Titles relevant to the Pine City area include the following from the Images of America series:

·       Hinckley and the Fire of 1894

·       Kanabec County

·       Legendary Locals of Pine City

·       Northern Pine County

·       Pine City

 

A selection of popular titles that are in the public domain, such as "Dracula." and “Jane Eyre,” completes the collection.

 

Ebooks Minnesota is a two-year pilot project of Minitex - a joint program of the Office of Higher Education and the University of Minnesota - and State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education. The collection was made possible in part by funding from the Minnesota Department of Education through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and by Minitex.

 

“It’s exciting to be able to provide Minnesotans with access to books from such a wide range of Minnesota publishers through Ebooks Minnesota,” said Minnesota State Librarian Jennifer Nelson. “I’m especially hoping that the collection will provide hours of reading pleasure for people of all ages, and that the children’s titles will give students another resource to use as they complete school assignments and learn more about the world around them. Ebooks Minnesota is also a great way to showcase all of the great books being published Minnesota’s independent presses.”

Ebooks Minnesota originated with the Explore Ebooks Minnesota project, a collaborative effort by library staff from across the state that explored the ways libraries could unite to improve electronic book experience for Minnesotans.

Can you believe it is already 2016?  Jump Start for the spring semester is this Thursday, January 7th from 4-6 pm.  Stop in the LRTC to get your photo ID badge printed, log in to the network and check your email and D2L accounts.
Also be sure you stop by the Atomic Learning table and talk to the representative.  They have hundreds of video tutorials to help you with technology issues, from Office programs to phones and tablets.  You might even get a free t-shirt!

Summer Session starts June 1!

The summer session is soon here!  We have been busy here in the LRTC getting things spruced up, lining up tutors, ordering and processing new books, making changes to help your online research go smoother, and other things in preparation for students coming back next week.
We look forward to helping make your summer session successful.  Stop by and get your student ID card, log in to the computers to access your course work, or just say hi!
We are open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday during the summer months.  Tutors are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in Office 129 in the LRTC.

Please note that we will be closing at 11:30 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week.  Tuesday and Thursday we will be open until 4:00 and closed Saturday and Sunday.  Our normal summer hours of 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday will resume next week.
